Florida Power and Light Company Given Go Ahead For Solar Power Facilities

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

On the 15 July, the Florida Public Services Commission granted FPL permission to begin work on three major Solar Power plants across the state.

The first of these projects is ‘The Martin Next Generation Solar Energy Center’, scheduled for construction at the company’s already existent ‘Martin Plant’ site. It is expected to be operational in 2010, and will produce a maximum 75W output. It will combine steam with solar thermal power in order to reduce the amount of natural gas used in the energy conversion process.

Second is ‘The DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center’ which is due for completion and operation in 2009. It is named after the county in which it’s being developed, and boasts a 25MW photovoltaic maximum capacity. This figure, when reached, would make it the largest photovoltaic center in the world.

The final project in the trio is ‘The Space Coast Next Generation Solar Energy Center’, and is the product of a partnership between NASA and the FPL. It has a photovoltaic capacity of 10MW, and will reportedly serve the needs of more than 2500 people. It is expected to be operational in 2009, and is to be built on the same grounds as the ‘Kennedy Space Center’.

With the green light now given, it signifies another step towards a greater and more proficient level of sustainable energy in the US. FPL reports that – pending the successful completion of the three plants – the energy saved would amount to the prevention of 3.5m tons of various green house gases over the three power plant’s lifetimes. The Environmental Protection Agency calculate that this has the same effect as 25,000 cars being removed from the roads of the United States each year.

Along with ‘Solar Tres’ the European Union commissioned large scale Solar Thermal Power plant, the Florida plants contribute to a Trans-Atlantic development of sustainable energy sites. Add ‘Nevada Solar One’ – the replacement for ‘Solar One’ and ‘Two’, on which ‘Solar Tres’ was based – and the number of substantially funded solar powered facilities is growing.

And it is not just Europe and North America that has been affected: The Japanese Companies ‘Kansai Electrical Power’ and ‘Sharp Japan’ announced plans in June for two solar power plants to be built under the ‘Sakai City Waterfront Mega Solar Power Generation Plan’, and are expected to be operational in 2010. The two sites are reported to have a combined maximum power of 38,000KW, and will therefore become two of the largest solar powered sites in the world.

Three of the world’s biggest political players, then, are continuing their commitment to sustainable energy sources. Include ‘Kigali Solaire’, the largest solar power plant in Africa – opened in Rwanda in 2007 – plus a maximum capacity 400KW photovoltaic array in New South Wales, Austrialia, and it amounts to sustainable energy in four of the six world continents. Place on the tally the plans for a ’solar trough’ – one long set of parabolic solar panels – in Mexico, which would amount to a maximum 400MW output for the city Agua Prieta, and that makes five continents in six.

Perhaps, then, the FPL centers are simply bucking the trend.

Buying a TV Wall Bracket by VESA Sizes

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

If you’ve recently purchased a large LCD or Plasma Screen Television, you have probably looked into getting a TV Wall Bracket. After all this is the advantage of having a slim line large panel screen.

To mount your TV, you require knowing your VESA size on the back of the TV. VESA sizes are as follows. VESA 75 have holes 75mm apart in a square. VESA 100 have holes 100mm apart in a square. Larger screens usually have VESA 200, these are 200mm apart offering greater support of the weight of the TV.

To mount your TV using a TV Wall Bracket, you’ll need to know which VESA standard it supports.

A wall bracket is screwed directly into these holes, the main support for the bracket is mounted onto the wall. It is very important if your mounting your TV onto a plasterboard wall, make sure you are on one of the studs running behind.

It is recommended that you mount your TV properly, leaving at least 16mm behind for air circulation. This is to ensure that the elements in your TV last longer.

Majority of today’s TV wall brackets will automatically hold your TV the required distance away from the wall, so don’t worry!

One other alternative, if you are not sure on the position for your TV, a cantilever wall bracket may solve your problem. The cantilever wall bracket allows you to tilt, turn and extend your TV from the wall allowing you to optimise your viewing angles.

If you want to mount your TV in the corner of the room, This is about the easiest option for you. Several models available with a universal VESA mount attached. Allowing to fix TV’s from 10 inches to 60 inches in size, extends up to 30 inches from the wall.

Some TV’s today don’t follow the standard on VESA sizes, and may be in between most VESA brackets available. The option you have is the universal wall bracket, these cover all sizes between the VESA sizes. One other advantage with the universal brackets are that they cover a range of screen sizes allowing you to change your TV in the future and not changing your bracket. Saving you those extra pounds!

The wall mounts usually come in 2 colours to match today’s TV colours, Black and Silver. Most brackets are available in both colours, allowing your mount not to look out of place.

If you are not confident on fitting your TV with a TV wall bracket, it is recommended that you pay that extra and get a installer to get this done for you. The VESA sizes are extremely helpful for them, knowing that the brackets will guarantee to fit. Dispersing the weight, efficiently.

Now you can get the right TV wall bracket for your TV, you have no need to worry about your new TV falling from the wall.

Remember… check the back of your LCD or plasma television for the correct VESA and talk to a professional if you are unsure!

Karl Foreman runs the online store TV Bracket Shop, http://www.tvbracketshop.com, Supplying a TV Wall Bracket for every VESA Television available!

Shopping For Luxury Motor Yachts

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Shopping for the second most important purchase of your life can be challenging and in your journey you may come across some of the finest motor yachts for sale in the world. After a lot of research, analyzing and discussion with loved ones you will come to a decision. With the sheer choice and variety of luxury motor yachts for sale on the market and the amount of money involved, this article attempts to make the process a little easier for you, the would-be buyer.

Research the market of Motor Yachts for Sale

Research, research, research is the key to seeing what is out there. If it is your first boat purchase it is particularly hard to know exactly what type of boat you are interested in and more importantly where to look. The Internet can be a good source of information and if you wish to make further enquiries you can always go on to contact yacht brokers or private sellers via telephone, and arrange viewings.

If you are buying a new boat, boat shows are also a great way to gain knowledge of the current models on offer and if you have a question about a specific luxury motor yacht brand you can also pose this direct to the manufacturer through their website. A more informal way to get anecdotal information is by visiting a marina and speaking directly to the owners who will usually divulge information about their boat. For real first hand experience of a motor yacht, take a charter for the weekend and get an idea of whether the craft is suitable for your requirements.

Motor Yachts- Fit for purpose?

Motor yachts are suited to ocean cruising, navigating large lakes or rivers. Impressive design and craftsmanship and lavish onboard facilities also make them ideal for entertaining or traveling. You may wish to entertain at the dock, entertain friends and family whilst cruising or use for business purposes for entertaining clients. The great benefit of purchasing such a craft is their versatility. They are easy to operate and so are convenient for those with little boating experience.

Types and Manufacturers of Motor Yachts

It is recommended you have a good idea of the purpose of the yacht you want as different yachts will have different features depending on their intended usage. There are different types of motor yachts for sale and you can choose from flybridge, hardtop, open or custom built yachts. Potentially even more confusing, there are tens of thousands of luxury motor yacht manufacturers worldwide. The top Italian manufacturers of motor yachts, Ferretti, Mochi Craft, Pershing, Itama and Riva (all part of the Ferretti group) are recognisable for their high quality, luxury furnishings and sophisticated design. Whilst the British manufacturers Pearl and Bladerunner (Ice Marine) produce high performance luxury motor yachts.

Additional Cost Considerations

If you are sticking to a budget, remember that there are additional costs that are associated with buying a motor yacht as these can often be overseen in the excitement of the buying process. Find out about running costs, surveys, insurance and mooring as these may invariably have an impact on your purchase decision and the size of your budget.

In summation there are no shortages of motor yachts for sale on the market and there is the added complication of having to take other factors into consideration when buying a motor yacht. So do your homework to make sure you reach a good decision, to get exactly what you want in a motor yacht at a price that is right for you.

Green Olympics – London and the Environment in 2012

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

With talk of China’s high rates of pollution dominating headlines in the run up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, it is important to remember that sport and the environment can go hand in hand.

In the last year, the Chinese capital has been the subject of much media scrutiny surrounding its environmental and emissions policy. In 2005, the European Space Agency declared that Beijing contained unnecessarily high levels of nitrogen dioxide, a bi-product of many industrial processes, including thermal power plants. It is poisonous to inhale, and since the revelation, the Chinese government have been accused of endangering sportsmen and spectators with the volume of air pollution that affects the capital.

For the environmentally conscious, it represents a serious concern. Historically, the designation of Olympic host has a symbolic resonance; it has been held by great cities, welcome to community spirit and accepted as representatives of an age old sporting tradition. That is not to deny that Beijing is a great city, but – for environmentalists – it has been difficult to reconcile the tradition and history of the city with a poor environmental and emissions policy.

Many spectators, then, will be watching closely. And they will also be looking to London in 2012, which will be subject to the same media scrutiny.

The Olympic Delivery Authority – the body who are in charge of developing the infrastructure for the London games – have so far acted carefully. David Higgins, the Chief Executive of the ODA, has officially stated that “Ensuring a sustainable approach to building the Games will help ensure London 2012 is remembered not only as two weeks of fantastic sporting action, but also as the greenest games to date”, championing the connection between the tradition of the event and the importance of a suitable environmental policy.

It is a positive statement, and one that is backed by the ‘Towards a One Planet Olympics’ initiative, which is the lynch-pin of the London games’ environmental policy, and was developed from the WWF/Bioregional’s ‘One Planet Living’, which lists ten main environmental initiatives that can be implemented throughout the world. These can be grouped into three key areas: carbon emission, sustainability, and culture and natural habitats.

The Committee for London 2012 has drawn these into five points: combating climate change, reducing waste, enhancing biodiversity, promoting inclusion, and improving healthy living. These tie in neatly with the original initiative, which targets – as some examples – ‘zero carbon’ and ‘zero waste’, sustainable transport and materials, and ‘health and happiness’.

In theory, then, the commitment is clear, and the aim is an all encompassing one; to be the first fully sustainable Olympic games. And – as the Beijing Olympics prepares to open – the London bid is already working towards that aim. The ODA announced in January of this year that it is already beating its target of recovering 90% of all demolition waste for recycling and reuse. It has also begun to create new habitats for any wildlife that might be found on Olympic sites, and is recycling complete buildings to be re-assembled away from original Olympic sites.

Certainly, 2012 is a long way away. Beijing comes first, and its environmental policy since the original bid has improved. When the London games come, it will have China as a blueprint, plus another four years of work towards sustainability. If it succeeds in its aim, it might be one of the world’s first large demonstrations of a link between tradition and a new ‘green-consciousness’. Something to look forward to.

Top 5 Golf Courses Near Lisbon

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Portugal is a great choice for golf. It’s close enough to get to easily and far enough to offer a very different feel to back home. On top of that, Lisbon is great for food and culture and has plenty of very good courses within easy reach. Luxury golf holidays near Portugal’s capital “tick a lot of boxes!”

Here are five golf courses near Lisbon that you must sample while you’re out there. You simply won’t find a stronger concentration of quality anywhere else in the country.

5. Quinta do Peru

This is a fairly flat and generous course for the most part, punctuated with a couple of soft climbs and two long par 3’s where you’d do well not to drop a shot. The real bonus about this course is its setting – in a pine forest of more than 300 acres and with the Arrabida Mountains as a back drop, this fine golf course in Portugal not only provides a great game but is a real pleasure for the eyes as well. It’s one of the most exclusive in the area but we can book you a tee-time or two.

4. Penha Longa

The first thing that will strike you when walking around Penha Longa is that you’ve left in your camera in your room! The combination of waterfalls, ancient monuments and gorgeous countryside make playing this course a real treat – but don’t let it distract you from the course, for this is Trent Jones at his most subtle. Well-protected greens and hilly terrain make club selection and playing with your brain vital. One of Europe’s finest and past host to the Portuguese Open.

3. Praia d’El Rey Obidos

The par 72 Praia d’El Rey is a soft links course that offers a real taste of “the way golf should be played” without being overly difficult. It’s also beautiful. Spread out amid pine trees, beachside dunes and inland water, it’s very easy to find yourself distracted but stay focused, look at how the terrain is shaped and enjoy! Designed by the highly-regarded American architect Cabell B. Robinson, this golf course near Lisbon should definitely be on your list for a rewarding round of golf combined with Atlantic Ocean views.

2. Troia

This is a very fine test of golf and very difficult off the back tees. It’s also extremely attractive with the trees, fairways and dunes mingling to perfection. Robert Trent Jones Senior designed one of his best courses here and he is deservedly proud of it. It’s got his typical hallmarks: bold bunkers, raised greens and challenging doglegs but it’s got that X Factor too. To get to the club, you need to take a short ferry crossing from Setubal to the Peninsula of Troia – it all adds to the magic of the day.

1. Oitavos

Regular host to the Portuguese Open, this course is a master class of how to mix bogey, par and birdie holes. You can attack, you have to defend and you have to think. Play Stableford or Matchplay and try to play the course twice as there are lots of surprises first time round. The wide fairways lead to narrow greens through dunes and umbrella pines so you can be relatively loose off the tee but then it’s down to the serious stuff! Close to the Atlantic, there’s definitely a links feel and the “design” clubhouse and delicious estate wines provide the perfect frame to a great day’s golf.

Beehives Destroyed by Pesticides and Felling

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Residents of Thar and several mountainous regions as well as arid zones and forests in Karachi have recently enjoyed new prosperity. However climate change does not bode well for honeybees. In many areas of Sindh, beehives have all but disappeared.

Environmentalists believe that climatic change, receding water flow in the River Indus and dried lakes and pesticides all contribute to the endangerment of the insect. Pesticides are accused of contributing greatly to the massive destruction of beehives in the region.

Farmers are said to use pesticides indiscriminately on vegetables, fruits and crops, including grains. This has an adverse effect on insects, birds and reptiles in the area. Bees are highly sensitive and select particular trees, plants and bushes to protect themselves from extreme heat and cold winds.

Environmentalists say bees cannot survive in this poisonous environment.

Dwindling groves, increasing deforestation and shortage of fresh water in rivers are also blamed for the destruction of beehives.

Reports say 53,000 acres of forest have been allotted to people with political clout, amidst strong protests by environmentalists. Groves have since begun disappearing at a staggering rate on both sides of the River Indus.

The remaining scattered groves along the River Indus are unable to sustain livestock or provide fuel, honey and water vegetables.

Ishaque Mangrio, an environmentalist from Sanghar said that climate change has affected rivers and forests but the excessive use of pesticides has also contributed to the destruction of beehives.

He said many people, who collect honey from these forests and make a living out of it, have since lost their source of income. As a result, there is hardly any pure honey in the local markets.

However, it can still be found in some areas of Thar, including Mithi and Nagarparkar, which attracts tourists.

Mangrio also said that honey per liter is being sold in Thar markets at Rs300 to Rs350 but the same product in Hyderabad and other towns is only available at Rs500.

Aziz Ahmed of the Matiari district recalled the days when the Indus was hardly two to three kilometres away from where he lives. Now, he says the entire forest area is being cultivated after chopping down trees. “There are hardly any groves in the area. People, who earned money by selling fresh honey, have been rendered jobless. The price of a one-litre bottle is Rs500 now but four to five years ago, it used to be a fifth of that.”

Others chimed in that there were beehives in the neighbourhood, the source of their livelihood.

Many people would visit these communities to regularly obtain honey for curing open wounds, eyesores and herbal remedies. Honey was also kept at home because it is thought to be a quick fix for coughs, colds and other health-related issues.

Fishermen on Karachi’s coast link the loss of beehives to the shortage of fresh water.

There are some NGOs, however, that claim to have started breeding bees in mangroves and other forests areas near the Indus. The results, as yet, are not visible from a commercial point of view. Beekeeping is said to be one of the better avenues to provide employment to young people.

Despite the claims made by the government and NGOs, promoting bee farming (apiculture) in Sindh is still a dream. The government needs to protect forests and flowering plants and train people for beekeeping at the Union Council level.

Green Carpet

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

The environment has new champions: Hollywood stars who walked down a biodegradable green carpet with eco-activists at the first screening of The 11th Hour in Canada. The documentary, produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio encourages political action to deal with environmental issues. Marlee Matlin was just one local star who sent a postcard to British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell urging him to save the province’s temperate forests, home to the endangered mountain caribou at the premiere. Other activists followed suit.

A private screening was followed by an after-party with organic beer and finger food from all organic ingredients was served.

Tzeporah Berman, founder of the eco-group ForestEthics is one of 50 leaders and scientists who appears in the film. She chose to go the distance, wearing an eco-certified wood fibre called Tencel.

She said, “I kid you not. The top I am wearing is made from ecologically, responsibly harvested wood.”

In a speech, she called for stiffer government action on carbon emissions, a halt to oil and gas subsidies and a new strategy with a goal of ending old-growth logging while protecting critical ecosystems.

DiCaprio, who was not at the screening, describes it as a movie not about doomsday, but about solutions.

The 11th Hour refers to the last moment when change is possible. The film makes notes of the issues facing the planet’s life systems: global warming, deforestation, species extinction, and depletion of the ocean’s habitats. The film also investigates how humanity impacts the earth’s ecosystems and what can be done to change the decline.

The Canadian forest industry said the film draws attention to the importance of sustainable management of forests.

Andrew Casey, vice-president of communications for the Forest Products Association of Canada said, “Canada has a rate of zero, for the most part, in terms of deforestation. But there is significant deforestation in countries like Brazil and Indonesia that are emerging as strong forest products suppliers. Until you do something about global demand, that demand is going to have to be met by somewhere. And if you shut stuff down here, it’s going to move to places where there is deforestation and that’s a bigger worry in the context of climate change.”

Berman addresses the state of the world’s forests, insisting 70 countries no longer have enough intact forests to maintain biodiversity. In contrast, three countries – Canada, Russia and Brazil – have the most remaining intact forests where biodiversity can be protected.

Berman, who was at the film’s Hollywood premiere earlier this month with DiCaprio promoted her drive to protect more forests in Canada with stars like Paris Hilton.

She said she welcomes the involvement of celebrities in her lifelong cause, adding, “I’d rather have my teenaged niece reading about Paris Hilton’s concern for Canadian forests than reading about what she is wearing. Hollywood becoming interested in green issues is taking these issues to a whole new level.”

“I don’t think this has changed my role,” she said of the film. “For over a decade I have done everything I can to raise awareness about the importance of Canada’s forests and how quickly our old-growth forests are being logged.

“It has taken me to a lot of strange places, from blockades to the boardrooms of some of the largest corporations in the world and now to the red – I mean green – carpet.”

How to Perfect Free Throws

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Free throws come into play quite a bit during a basketball game. Being good at free throws is beneficial to your team, and every player should work to be good at them. Choosing who makes the free throws is not always going to be an option. Being able to make free throws is something that every player must know how to do.

Free throws are often overlooked in the beginning when players are learning the sport, but as skill levels advance they become very important. It never hurts to begin practicing them as soon as possible.

A free throw is a great way to earn extra and easy points. The following gives you three tips to becoming a master of the free throw.

Tip 1: Line Up

One of the greatest things about a free throw is that you are allowed time to set up the shot and really focus. You do not have to worry about any other players and you can really just be in the shot.

You should start out your free throw by lining up the shot. You want to make sure your lead foot (whatever hand you shoot with is your lead hand and thus that side is your lead foot) is lined up with the center of the basket. On many courts there is a mark that indicates this spot. You want to point your foot at the basket.

Also stand tall, yet loose, and set up your arms in position.

Tip 2: Set a Routine

When you are practicing you should have a routine you follow when making free throws. Having a routine will help you to relax and get into the groove to make the shot. You can do whatever makes you feel comfortable. You have 10 seconds to get prepared, so use those 10 seconds to relax and limber up. Also make sure you set up your shot in a routine manner.

Having a routine allows you to be ready for a free throw any time.

Tip 3: Concentrate

You have to concentrate during your free throw. It is important for you to focus when making a free throw. While you do not have the worry of opposing players in your face, blocking you, you will have a lot of noise from fans and your teammates.

You have to be able to relax under the pressure and just follow your routine. You have to be able to let your moves flow and allow yourself to be in the moment.

These 3 tips will allow you to become more comfortable and effective with free throws. They will allow you to be able to approach a free throw situation without a lot of stress and to be able to pull off the shot.

Free throws are important, but if you give into the pressure and forget your form then you will only let everyone down by missing the shot. You have to be composed and ready when your time comes to make that free throw shot.

Fundamentals of Sports Betting

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Betting is age old. It may be possible that no game was left virgin of betting. Bookies and wages have always been attached to different kind of games around the globe, and it has been more popular nowadays than ever. Sports betting, as the name implies, is the activity of making a wager on your proposed outcome of a sporting event.

Betting has always been controversial. In many countries, sports’ betting is illegal. In the Europe and less than three states in the US, however, sports betting is legalized. They did so in the argument that it increases the interest of sport fans in particular sporting events. This, they say, benefits the teams, players and leagues being bet on because they will be having higher attendance in their games and bigger television audiences.

The Basics

There are different systems for betting and odds making for different sports and even for the same sport. It generally depends on what the bettors want to play, what the bookies and odds maker wants to implement and certain specific circumstances. There are basic jargons in the world of sports betting that one should first be familiarized with.

1. Action – This means betting activity.

2. Sportsbook – Also known as book, it is an establishment who takes the bet. The person who takes the bet is called a bookie.

3. Vig – This is the commission or percentage that the bookie takes as his profit. It is short for vigorish. It is also called juice.

4. To Handicap – This means to give one team a point advantage. This is usually done to even up the votes of the two opposing teams. Later, you will know why this is essential.

5. Handle – The handle is the summation of all the wagered money on bets.

How Does It Work?

It is popular to bet on a point spread. In a point spread, even the losing team can “win” their earnings. An example of a point spread may be quoted as Team1 -7 or Team2 +7. In this situation, if Team1 defeats Team2 by greater than 7 points, they win and bettors of team1 would receive $100 on a $110 bet. They would then get a total of $210. Those who bet on Team2 would lose their bet money. If Team2 would lose by less than 7 points, they would be the winner of the spread. They would be rewarded the same way bettors on Team1 would be rewarded if Team1 had won by greater than 7 points. If Team1 wins by exactly 7 points, then it is called a “push”. Neither of the two sides wins, and all bettors get back their full money. This is why spread points are usually set on half points. Why do they do this? It is because odd makers and bookies try to keep the action balanced in both sides. When more bets are placed on one side of the game and it becomes the winning side, then the bookie will lose a lot of money. It is ideal that there would be almost equal division of bettors to both teams so that half of the bettors will lose. This way, the bookie takes home a reasonable amount of vig.

Reminder

In betting on a game, the bettor should have knowledge of the game and the one playing in it. Go with what you intuition and common sense say. Never bet big when you’re betting for the first time. Like any other gambling games, it really takes some time to learn and develop skills in betting.
