Best Selling Fiction in 2009

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

If you are an avid reader or have an avid reader in your home than you know how quickly books can be read in your home. If this is the case you will want to know what some of the best sellers are so that you can always find new books to read. There are so many books that are published every day it is hard to determine which ones are worth reading and which ones are not. Furthermore the opinions of the many different critics could greatly differ from your own opinion so you have to one with similar tastes if you want to end up reading a book you will like, or at least choose books that many different critics have a good opinion of rather than just one. Fiction books are even harder to choose because an opinion regarding a specific storyline is so personal whereas with non-fiction you are reading fact and basing an opinion on how you felt about the book rather than whether it was entertaining or not. Listed are some bestselling fiction books from 2009 that have been listed on numerous lists. If you have read them all you may want to search other lists for great books that you have not had the opportunity to read yet.

Dean Koontz – Breathless – Koontz is always writing bestsellers and this is just another one of his great works. Always bordering on the fantastic, his books are entertaining and suspenseful and this one is no different. Breathless is a story that takes place in the Colorado Rockies and involves mysterious animals there.

Sue Grafton – U Is For Undertow – The latest of the Kinsey Millhone cases is as good as the rest. Grafton always gives a great story line and a little bit of drama and suspense to go with it as she has done again in this latest book of the series.

John Grisham – Ford County – Typical Grisham set in the south with these newest stories taking place in Mississippi. There are multiple stories in this collection each a bit longer than a short story. This book is great for those individuals who would rather read shorter stories.

Michael Crichton – Pirate Latitudes – Even after his death Crichton is still delighting his readers with intriguing fantasy. This story was found after the author died and is about British pirates in the Caribbean.

Stephen King – Under the Dome – Whenever you hear the name Stephen King you know you can expect a good read and this book is no different than the rest. The story takes place in Maine, as most of King’s books do, and is about a town that is trapped in itself by a force field that is invisible to all.

These books that have made best seller lists are by some of the top, most read authors writing today. There are numerous other books by not so well known authors that are well worth reading as well and you can find them by simply doing an internet search.

What You Really Need to Know About Metal Detectors and Their Tools

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

A metal detector can have many different uses, from searching for gold and buried treasure, to looking for contraband guns and devices at airport security. In recent years metal detectors have become more common and people will travel to all parts of the world hunting for precious metals, but rarely getting it.

A metal detector is made up of a number of different parts, including a stabilizer, a control box, a shaft and a search cell. The stabilizer is designed to hold the detector and stop it from vibrating away from you when you move it from one side to the other. The microprocessor, speaker, batteries and circuitry are all in the control box. The control box and the coil are connected by the shaft, which can sometimes be adjusted to suit your needs. The part of the metal detector that actually senses or finds the metal is known as the loop or the search head.

Some metal detectors have a jack that can be used to connect to headphones and on some detectors the control box is below the shaft and there might be a display unit above it. Depending on which one you use, it may work on low frequency, beat frequency oscillation and pulse induction. Probably the most popular metal detector is a very low frequency one that people use to search for gold or other precious metals; on this type of detector there are two coils.

Some detectors work on transmission cells and some on receiver cells. In the transmission models electricity is sent along a coil loop, first in one direction and then the other. The unit’s frequency is determined by the number of times the current switches between each side. In the receiver cell the coil loop acts as an antenna to pick up frequencies that come from the ground where the metal might lie.

A metal detector uses what is known as a VLF pulse which tells one metal from another by what is known as phase shifting, which is the difference between the target’s frequency and the transmitter’s frequency. The detector either emits a tone, or a light comes on in the display unit giving you information on the different types of metal.

The way in which detectors work means they can pick out what might be gold from a base metal. Beach hunters along the Jersey shore have made some amazing discoveries with metal detectors and every day someone else is out there hoping to make their fortune with a metal detector. People also hunt for coins and while some have been found, there are no guarantees.

Most people who use a metal detector do so for the sheer enjoyment of doing it, if they find something of value while they’re out there, then that’s just the icing on the cake. Beach hunters and others who go out regularly with their detectors refer to some places as hot spots, i.e., places where they are most likely to get a hit and find something valuable.

You can buy a metal detector quite cheaply or you can go for a top of the line model that could cost you hundreds of dollars. Be wise in your choosing though as some are definitely better than others.

Backpacking Supply

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Having a good solid backpack checklist to go by is a good idea when preparing for a trip into the wilderness. There are lots of things that you will be bringing with you so there can be just as many for you to forget and you don’t want that to happen way out in the wilderness. The last thing that you would want to happen is to forget to bring some of the important things on your backpack checklist that can save your life if ever needed. These are a few of the mandatory things to have on a backpack checklist.

1.Bring a good supply of water or a purifier; including a purifier on your backpack checklist is a better idea than bringing cases of water if you’re hiking deep into the woods because it will reduce the weight of water you will be bringing.

2.Food is another thing that is good to over stock on also. I recommend looking into the military MRE. They might not always taste the best but they have everything for a square meal in a small package and they are watertight. And they now have expanded the line of MRE’s so they have some better tasting ones now if you spice them up a little. So try too add these to your backpack checklist as well.

3.Being comfortable is a big thing outdoors as well as at home. Have you ever woken up from camping with rocks poking you in the back and aching pains from a bad sleeping mat? Try to stay as comfortable and don’t forget these items on your backpack checklist.

4.First aid kits are among the top things on your backpack checklist to bring as well DO NOT FORGET THIS ONE!

5.Good solid and reliable gear is always a plus too, also can make you more comfortable and make the trip more enjoyable so you aren’t fighting setting up things. So try and add these to your backpack checklist.

6.One of my favorites to bring along for the trip is baby wipes. Yes baby wipes, when there isn’t a shower near by you will be glad that you have these guys around to keep yourself a little bit cleaner than you would be. I send cases of them to all my friends in the Middle East and they love them when there are out away from base.

7.Last but not least have some type of weapon or bright light in case of any animals that might want to harm you or your family, better to be safe than sorry.

When you go camping, hiking, or backpacking just follow a good backpack checklist when getting all of your gear together. All of those mentioned above would have to be some of the top items that should never be skimped on and definitely should never be left behind. If something was to go wrong then you could be in bad shape and it would turn to a bad trip quickly. Following a good backpack checklist will ensure that you will have a good time out there and make things go a little smoother.

New Backpacking Gear

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

When you are out in the wild and are going for an adventure it is always a good feeling when you know that you have the new backpacking gear that is reliable and will not fail you when need it the most. I always believed that you get what you pay for and it has served me well. There are so many choices and manufacturers for new backpacking gear out there that it can get a little distracting at times but not to worry this will give you a good sense of direction in finding the right new backpacking gear that suites you.

First is finding out what type of backpacking you will be doing in order to decide which route to go in getting you new backpacking gear. Do you go extreme like climbing up faces and repelling as well? Are you the backpacker that likes to go on long trips out into the wilderness for long periods of time? Or there are the normal ones that will go for a short excursion for a day or two? Any of these require you to be well prepared in case any thing happens that you did not count on, and most the time that is what happens. The last thing that you would want to have happen is to get out there only to find that you left your compass, or first aid kit behind. These are a few good companies that I like to use, Eureka, Granite Gear, Jan sport, Coleman, Mountainsmith, the list goes on and on but just try to choose the best new backpacking gear for your needs depending on which type you will be doing. You will always find quality gear it’s just finding what suites your needs when looking for new backpacking gear.

Trying to remember everything to take can always be a chore too especially when you get there and realize that you forgot the tent or your boots. Keeping your new backpacking gear in a well organized space can help with this. Here is a good checklist to go through when preparing for a backpacking trip- Map, Compass, Flashlight or Headlamp, Extra Food and Clothes, MRE’s are good to bring also and they are in waterproof bags, sunglasses, FIRST AID KIT IS A MUST HAVE! Pocket Knife or Bowie Knife, Waterproof Matches, Fire starter, Water, Bottles, a Camel Pack, or a water purifier, Bug Repellent, and Sun Screen. These are only a few of the many that you will need but they are the things that will keep you alive if something terrible happens, God Forbid it does, but better safe than sorry right? Getting good quality new backpacking gear will also make your trip more pleasant overall by keeping you comfortable on your adventure through the wilderness. Over all just keep yourself equipped with the right gear, be safe, make good decisions, never underestimate the power of Mother Nature and it will be a trip you will not forget, and don’t forget to take pictures as well.

Summer Camps Open Up a World of Possibilities

Monday, March 8th, 2010

If you are looking for something for your kids to do this summer, you’re not alone. An estimated 10 million kids will attend summer camp this year, doing everything from swimming to learning how to paint. With the staggering numbers of summer camps out there, how do you choose?

Many camps run in one week increments, so you can select a variety of camps, or stay with one all summer. Here are some things to ponder.

If your child participates in sport during the school year, a week of camp in that activity might improve their performance. There are skills camps for basketball, football, soccer and pretty much any other sport you can name. If the group they play with during the rest of the year is run by a company, there’s a good chance that same company offers summer camps. If the group they participate in year round is run by volunteer coaches, they probably know of some good summer camps nearby. This is also ideal to brush up on skills before trying out for the high school team or any club team that requires tryouts.

Many of the same organizations also offer introductory camps. This is perfect for the kid who wants to try something new and see if they like it. Of course a big side benefit is exercise and worn out kids.

Is there a non-sport activity that your child enjoys? What about ceramics, scouts, or horseback riding? Sign them up for a camp where they can spend the whole day exploring these interests. There are usually camps offered for a variety of ages. For example, a farm-themed camp might offer a program for young children where they learn about a variety of animals, including ponies, and do animal themed art projects. The same facility might offer a full fledged horseback riding camp for older children.

In scouting type programs, kids are earning badges and achievements all year long. Summer camp is a great opportunity to experience many of the outdoor scouting activities and some that require a little extra time. You can often find a sleep away camp for children who are old enough, as well as daycamps.

Educational summer camps are offered for a variety of topics. Do you have a super curious youngster who wants to learn how to program video games or study marine wildlife? Summer is a great time because kids are free from homework. If your child is struggling with math or reading, a summer class is usually more relaxed than regular school. This can make that difficult subject fun again, as well as give them a boost so that it will be a little easier when school starts up again in September.

Many summer camps are just about relaxing and having fun. Kids play games and go on field trips to fun places with others their own age. Every kid should have a chance to just relax for some of the time during their school break. These types of programs are offered by places that do regular after school care, city recreation departments and churches.

Don’t forget about volunteering. Starting at about age 12, there are plenty of opportunities to help out with younger kids. Smaller kids need a lot of assistance to participate in all these great activities, and who better to help out than teens?

Summer opens up a world of opportunities for kids to learn and have fun. Don’t think of finding summer camps as just finding child care so you can work. Find some summer camps in your area that you child might be interested in and give them a few choices. As them to try one new thing over the summer.

The Most Expensive RVs

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Is there anything better than loading up the family in your RV and taking off for some fun adventures somewhere across the country? The answer is yes, but only if you have half a million to $2.5 million to spare.

If you do have that kind of ‘spare change’ lying around then you too can enjoy one of the top three most expensive RVs. While these may look like other RVs in the traditional sense, the amenities and features offered are anything but typical. Whoever built these super RVs certainly subscribed to the ‘spare no expense’ theory. When it comes to comfort and extras, these three offer them all:

1. Vantare Platinum Plus: Coming in at number one, the Vantare Platinum Plus will set you back $2.5 million. It is by far the most expensive RV in the world. This rolling mansion features Swarovski crystal to compliment custom sculptures up top on the ceiling, steps that are made out of marble that lead into the cabin, leather sofas and chairs, and interior room galore. The gas tank can hold 235 gallons which makes for a hefty fill-up, though if you can afford this beauty then the price of gas is probably the last thing on your mind. Best of all the Vantare Platinum Plus has a sports car carrier that is hidden underneath the RV itself. That’s right; you can be in tow without having to show it.

2. Country Coach Prevost RV: The silver medal for the most expensive RVs goes to the Country Coach Prevost RV. At $1 million plus, this luxury RV has it all. These are the same bus conversions that you see many of the rock stars and NASCAR starts travelling around in. With room for up to ten people this RV has tons of space and comes with flat screen televisions that are bigger than the ones you would find in a typical American household.

3. Unicat Amerigo Series: Rounding out the top three is the Unicat Amerigo Series. This RV is for all you that want to be able to take your RV off road; seriously. From the outside it looks like an armored truck that is filled with money and on its way to the bank, but on the inside you would be hard pressed to find such luxury elsewhere. At half a million dollars this on and off road RV is not as spacious as the top two but it does have a full kitchen and lots of leg room. This RV can be taken down some pretty rough terrain and allows for its owner to camp in luxury at places where the standard RV would get stuck in a heartbeat. No more hiking necessary.

While there are many RVs that you can choose from if you are in the market, none will offer the comforts, the looks, or the price of these top three most expensive. However, if you can afford one of these ultimate RVs then you will certainly get to enjoy plenty of looks both while at the campground and while on the road to the campground as well.

A Hunting Tournament Hat Can Make Your Event Hit the Target

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

The hunting tournament hat is not just for hunting, but can be used during a number of outdoor activities that include hiking, fishing, or simply keeping the sun out of your eyes. What you use the hat for is totally up to you, but what is important is to know that there is a hat available that works well for the hunter in regards to visibility, fit, blending in with your surroundings, and looking good. For the hunter these are all important attributes when choosing the perfect hat. And one should not expect anything less.

So what can you expect a hunting tournament hat to look like? Well, there are several different styles to choose from. For instance, you have the cowboy style of hat, the winter bomber hat that looks like the hat of an aviator in 1930, the classic hunting hat that looks like a baseball cap, and the timber hat. So there is no doubt that you have plenty to choose from when you need to pick the perfect hunting hat for your tournament. Although many feel the classic hat is the best for them, they may also choose others for times when the temperature is cold or hot.

The bomber hat, covers the ears, may have fur inside to keep the head warm, and is made of multiple layers of fabric. This is, perhaps, the warmest hunting tournament hat you can invest in. Furthermore, you have the timber hat that looks of that worn by a lumberjack. This is also a warm hat that may be two-toned. This means that it may have a soft orange top like a toboggan to make you more visible, but a bill like a baseball cap that may be of a different color such as camouflage. As for the cowboy style, those styles are for those who like the benefits offered by the cowboy hat, but need the hat to be good for hunting.

As for the colors you can expect the hunting tournament hat to come in, they come in natural colors such as those you will find your hunting garb in. They are available in camouflage, brown, green, and black. You also have the safety orange color available on some hats so that you will be visible to other hunters. Buffalo plaid tends to also be a popular color. This is a hat that is made of red and black plaid and is also reminiscent of a lumberjack hat. You can go for any look you desire with the different color choices.

So when you need the perfect hunting tournament hat, you have options. Everyone is different as far as their taste in style, so there is variety. You also have different colors to choose from so that you can wear your preferred hat when out hunting or in any situation that you like. No one said that these hats had to be worn exclusively for hunting. You can also wear them when engaging in a number of other activities that you find enjoyable. It is entirely up to you.

Rodeo Events: What to Expect at Your First Time Cowboy Exhibition

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Although they have been a part of American culture for decades, many people have never been to a rodeo. With their increasing popularity, some might be interested in going, but a little unsure at what takes place. Let’s take a look at an average rodeo and what the first time attendee might expect.

First of all, professional rodeos in North America come under the umbrella of both the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA). Other governing bodies exist for children’s, high school, college level, senior, Native Americans and other minority groups.

The events in modern professional rodeo can be divided up into two categories; rough stock events and timed events. The major events in these categories are as follows:

Rough Stock Events:

Bronc riding – perhaps one of the most iconic of the rodeo events. Riders try to stay on the horse for 8 seconds. They are not allowed to touch the horse with their free hand. A maximum of 50 points is given to both the rider and the horse. Both scores are added up for the total with scores in the 80 point range being very good and scores in the 90s being outstanding. Bronc riding is further divided into bareback bronc riding and saddle bronc riding.

Bull riding – essentially the same concept as bronc riding, but due to the size and unpredictability of the animal, bull riding is considerably more dangerous.

Timed Events:

Calf roping – rodeo’s oldest timed event, a cowboy chases after a calf, throws a lariat or lasso around the calf’s neck, dismounts, throws the calf to the ground and then ties 3 of it’s 4 feet together.

Breakaway roping – a type of roping where the calf is not thrown to the ground and tied. Instead, a very short rope with a flag attached is tied to the saddle. Once the calf is roped, the horse stops and the rope “breaks away” from the saddle.

Team roping – this involves two people lassoing and restraining a full sized steer. One person will lasso the horns while the other lassos the legs. The riders work together so the steer will lose balance and lie down.

Barrel racing – an event based on speed and agility. Barrels are set up in a cloverleaf pattern. Riders will gallop around them as quickly and gracefully as possible without knocking them over. At most levels of rodeo this is a women’s event.

Steer wrestling – much like it sounds, a rider will jump off his horse, grab a running steer by their horns and attempt to wrestle them to the ground. Most likely the most dangerous event in the entire rodeo.

Goat tying – a rider approaches a tethered goat, jumps off and, similar to calf roping, throws the goat to the ground and ties 3 of its feet together. Intended for younger participants to gain skills associated with calf roping, it is not part of the actual rodeo competition.

Although not part of the competition itself, many rodeos begin with a Grand Entry where riders carrying various flags and banners enter the arena with the playing of the national anthem to follow. Variety acts, including musicians or trick riders, may take part in the rodeo also.

A big part of history and American culture, rodeos are always interesting and often great fun. Try and get yourself to a local rodeo or attend one on your next vacation.

You aren’t likely to find a rodeo in Southern California, but you’ll find the best Long Beach events and plenty of things to do. Visit historical attractions such as Rancho Los Cerritos, where you can discover how the “wild west” of 19th century California.

To choose a monster, character or object, left-click; to interact with it, right-click. If you have any inquiries regarding anything on your interface, just hold your mouse over the item until a tool tip box comes out with info on the item at hand.
