Domestic Violence “Tiffany’s Style” – 5 Challenges of Wealthy Abused Women

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Many people think that domestic violence is easier to deal with when you are wealthy. But, the fact is that the affluent have a whole set of issues unique to their elevated socioeconomic status that makes dealing with domestic abuse even more difficult.

How is it for the rich battered woman?

1) Disbelief

When they break their silence, a roar breaks out shoving them right back into hiding. People doubt that they are actually abused. “How can that be?” they hear, “Your husband is a pillar in the community.”

He can be a doctor, a lawyer, a politician, your community’s own clergy… If he serves in these caring/healing/protective positions, how in the world can he be an abuser? This dichotomy confuses outsiders looking in on affluent domestic abuse.

As an aside, it evens confuses Google. Try doing a Google search on domestic violence and wealth or money or affluent. These words connoting an upscale socioeconomic status cannot be found in combination with the term “domestic violence” (at least not at the time of this writing).

2) No Empathy

People withhold empathy for the circumstances of wealthy battered women. “You go on exotic vacations, live in a nice house, have your pick of the season’s best…”

The implication here is that you should “turn the check” with respect to you being slapped around and enjoy your wealth. It says that the lifestyle is the “price” for putting up with being battered.

3) False Claims and Re-victimization

When affluent battered women reach out to social services for help, the potential for the abuse they endure increases exponentially. She can become buried in the play-offs sponsored by the payoffs of their manipulating abusive partners.

Abusers are known for their ability to manipulate healthcare providers and law enforcement to establish false claims about their victims. It’s their way of discrediting the domestic violence survivor, and ultimately saving face by casting off any responsibility for alleged or documented domestic abuse.

4) Empty Legal War Chest

When they go to divorce court, all hell can break lose. They can be buried in pleading upon pleading characteristic of legal stalking in high profile divorce cases.

Oftentimes, these battered women stand in family court pro se’ representing themselves against their battering partner’s team of legal counsel. They may even have a list of divorce attorneys left in their wake once payment could not be forthcoming.

You see, most of the so-called affluent battered women have no control over the family money. So, when the chase is on to break the cycle of abuse, the financial spigot is turned off. And they remain at the mercy of their partner’s financial war chest—the resources defining their upscale status in the first place.

Then, when they try to draw from the same resources available to their less “financially empowered” counterparts, it doesn’t get any better. Unfortunately, “affluent” battered women reaching out to the public system for legal aid can be told, “We can’t help you because your needs for legal assistance will exceed our entire annual budget.”

5) The Heinous Crimes

Sadly, these are the domestic violence divorce cases wherein battered mothers may lose contact with their minor children, or get token contact via supervised visitation. These are the domestic violence survivors that fall through the cracks of the legal system—becoming childless, homeless, and penniless.

These are the brave women who thought they had it easier, as did everyone else, because of their wealth. And then, they recognize their challenges in breaking free ultimately can leave them re-victimized by their partner’s use of the family money.

If you are a bettered woman of wealth, be mindful of the challenges before you. And be prepared to deal with each and every one of them as you campaign for your breaking the cycle of domestic abuse.

Tongue Rings Can Be Hidden With Care

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Tongue piercings are becoming more and more popular, especially in Western cultures. Although there are a variety of tongue rings and tongue piercings available, the traditional straight barbell piercing continues to be the most popular.

Pre-pierced teens and adults often wonder if this style of tongue ring will be visible when they talk, if it will cause a lot of swelling and if they will experience any trouble while eating after this piercing is done. To answer these questions, many search online and to make it more convenient, I have compiled the general responses into this article.

People also often wonder if the tongue piercing process will be especially painful; and very common question is “How much will it hurt to get my tongue pierced?” This is difficult to answer because some people report it didn’t even hurt as badly as an earring, and others say that it’s the most excruciating piercing there is. Every person has a different pain threshold so just consider this: if it was completely unbearable, there wouldn’t be some many people with tongue piercings.

How badly will my tongue swell? Will people see my tongue ring when I talk?

Immediately after the piercing, you will likely experience a lot of swelling and this is the most difficult time to hide your tongue ring. You will still be able to talk, but due to the swelling, your voice may sound different and some words will be harder to pronounce. Test this out by eating or sucking on ice for a long time until your tongue feels numb, then try to talk. Although it’s only a vague comparison, this trick could give you an idea.

To pierce your tongue, the piercer will generally use a titanium or stainless steel tongue ring. Unfortunately, these are not clear or tongue colored, which makes them more difficult to hide. After it heals, however, you can change your tongue ring to one that is less noticeable. Tongue rings come in varying lengths too. Wearers report that a shorter barbell is easier to hide, but also keep in mind that dentists say that this kind will cause more enamel damage because it is to easy to hold between your teeth.

One other option to hide tongue rings is to get the piercing as far back as possible in the tongue. This is not always the best technique because the placement of the ring depends largely on the location of veins in your tongue. Your professional piercer can help you determine where the tongue ring can go.

Many suggest that freshly pierced teens and adults try to keep their mouths closed as often as possible and try to talk quietly so they don’t have to open their mouths as wide.

Will I be able to eat immediately after getting my tongue pierced?

Once again, the culprit here is the swelling. Although you may not experience very much pain at the piercing site, the swollen size of your tongue may make it difficult to eat solid foods. Professionals recommend soup and soft foods like applesauce or mashed potatoes. Of course, just like a tonsillectomy, you can have as much ice cream as you can manage!

The swelling will begin to subside within a few days and your tongue should return to normal in about a week.

Shopping

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Shopping, it is something that the general public is very familiar with. We all love and cherish it. When shopping, we like to try things on and see if they would fit us. There are a couple steps to effective shopping. The first step is purpose. One must know what type of shopping they are willing to engage in. When shopping with no money at all, one is considered a window-shopper. Unless the person decided to shoplift, at their own discretion, it is sure that they will leave the shop the same way that they came in. When a person is shopping with no money, they must bring a pencil or a paper, or just be able to go ahead and find a way to store the items that they need mentally. Such people, use and see what they need and what the y want. Knowing to separate needs and wants is not only an essential skill in shopping, but also in life. People that have proficient mastery in this section will be able to go ahead and have success in shopping and in life because they are experienced and they demonstrate self control. People that have mastered these skills and are shopping with no money can move on to the next step. Once a person has seen what they need and want, they can go ahead and save towards it.

Once they have saved towards it they must scramble back to the store to make sure that their items are still intact. Also, many people must know how to take advantages if deals in order to be a great shopper. Being a great shopper isn’t all about the amount of money one has, the class that is in their clothes, or the amount of clothes that they have, but rather their keen eye. Having a keen eye means that one will be able to spot out great deals that are only temporary. Such people are able to maximize their purchasing power as they will be able to outfox their competitors when it comes to shopping. Also, shopping can be done in huge centers such as the mall in order to give everyone a larger perspective. Once people are presented with a lot of options, they will be able to choose accruing to their preference, not what they are limited to. It is important for shoppers to be aware of the supply and the demand. If a shopper has any knowledge at all that indicates that an item is about to be in great demand they must buy it immediately, whether the money is there. This will prevent any loss of money when the person buys the good when it has reached optimal demand. Also it is important for shoppers to lie off of unreasonable deals. These are deals that do not make economic sense; this is because many people feel as if they have to get an item when it comes out. Shopping can be hard, but one has to be smart about it.

How to Calculate a Cost of Living Index

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Definition:

A Cost Of Living Index (COLI) is a price index that measures the relative cost of living over time. It is an index that measures differences in the price of goods and services.

A COLI measures changes over time in the amount that consumers need to spend to reach a certain level or standard of living. COLI is typically a number, where the Base Index is 100.

A Consumer Price Index (CPI) on the other hand is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by consumers. CPI is typically a percentage change compared to the previous period. An increase in CPI is called inflation, while a decrease is called deflation. Both the COLI and the CPI use a market basket of consumer goods and services.

A COLI is also used to measure the price of the same quantities and types of goods and services in different geographic locations. The COLI used in this way shows the difference in living costs between different locations.

An international COLI measures the differences in the local currency price of the same quantities and types of goods and services in different countries converted to a single currency. This shows the difference in relative living costs between international cities. The cost of living difference between locations indicates the amount that consumers need to spend to maintain a certain level or standard of living.

Amongst other uses, COLI’s are used by organizations and individuals in the calculation of expatriate salary and cost of living allowances in order to ensure consistent salary purchasing power between the home and host country.

Next we will discuss how to calculate a COLI between 2 locations applicable to expatriate employees.

Methodology:

For consistency the goods and services are grouped into similar/related basket groups.

For accuracy the exact quantity and type of each of the goods and services within each basket are defined. Using these definitions, the prices of the same quantities and types of goods and services in each geographic location is obtained from at least 3 different suppliers representative of those that would typically be used by expatriates.

When calculating the cost of living between 2 locations the difference in the aggregate cost of all the selected basket groups are examined in each location using the average reported price in each location for the same quantity of each item. The basket groups are weighted according to Expatriate expenditure norms.

For example the following 13 basket groups have the following weighting which represents expatriate expenditure norms (the 13 basket groups do not count equally):

• Alcohol & Tobacco (Weight 2.0%)

• Clothing (Weight 2.5%)

• Communication (Weight 2.0%)

• Education (Weight 5.0%)

• Furniture & Appliances (Weight 5.0%)

• Groceries (Weight 16.5%)

• Healthcare (Weight 5.0%)

• Household (Weight 30.0%)

• Miscellaneous (Weight 3.0%)

• Personal Care (Weight 3.0%)

• Recreation and Culture (Weight 6.0%)

• Restaurants, Meals Out and Hotels (Weight 2.0%)

• Transport (Weight 18.0%)

Prices for the defined quantities and types of goods and services in each location per basket are gathered on a quarterly basis and the resulting index is updated for each of the above baskets. These indexes are then used to calculate the COLI between any 2 locations. The COLI is the relative differential in the local cost of the basket groups and the ruling exchange rate between the 2 selected locations.

When comparing the cost of living between different locations the objective is to calculate the difference in the cost of living expressed as an index using one of the locations as the Base. Typically the home location is referred to as the Base Location (Index = 100).

Practical Example:

Take for example a company headquartered in Location A with overseas operations in Location B and C. They send employees on 2 to 3 year assignments from time to time to Location B and C and need a set of COLI’s using Location A as the Base City in order to calculate assignment salary and cost of living allowances.

In our example Location A has an index of 92, Location B has an index of 129, and Location C has an index of 75.

Using our example, you want to know what the COLI is for Location B and C using Location A as the Base Location:

• Location A COLI = (Location A / Location A) X 100 = (92 / 92) X 100 = 100

• Location B COLI = (Location B / Location A) X 100 = (129 / 92) X 100 = 140.2

• Location C COLI = (Location C / Location A) X 100 = (75 / 92) X 100 = 81.5

The COLI indicates the difference in the cost of living between the locations. In the above example the COLI of 140.2 means that Location B is 1.402 times more expensive than Location A. In this example the COLI is positive (higher). This would mean that a person who moves from Location A to Location B would need to earn 40.2% more, to have the same standard of living in Location B as they have currently in Location A.

Location C on the other hand has a COLI of 81.5. This means that Location C is 0.815 times less expensive than Location A. In this example the COLI is negative (lower). This would mean that a person who moves from Location A to Location C could earn 18.5% less and have the same standard of living in Location C as they have currently in Location A.

Applying a cost of living index to a salary calculation:

The COLI values are useful in calculating an appropriate salary in another location. A calculator such as a Salary Purchasing Power Parity Calculator (SPPP) calculates an appropriate salary using the COLI, exchange rate and hardship difference.

The salary used in the calculator is gross or net salary. We advise using net (after tax) salary. This will result in a net salary result in the new location, which would then be grossed up for tax and any other statutory deductions in the new location. The calculator will then apply the following formula based on the selections in the calculator:

Salary X Cost of living Index Differential X Exchange Rate X Hardship Differential = Calculated Salary in new location

Applying the formula to our earlier example with a salary of $100,000 in Location A, sent on assignment to Location B, with an increase in hardship of 10% and paid in US Dollars:

• Location B COLI = 140.2

• Location C COLI = 81.5

Salary Calculation = $100,000 X 1.402 X 1 X 1.1 = $154,220

This means that an employee earning a salary of $100,000 in Location A, requires a salary of $154,220 in Location B to compensate for a 40.2% higher cost of living and a 10% higher level of hardship.

A Brief History of the Teddy Bear

Friday, May 14th, 2010

In 2002 the teddy bear celebrated its 100th birthday. The exact date of when the first Teddy Bear was made largely depends on whether you live in the United States or in Europe, although it should be said that both countries have serious claims of creating the first Teddy Bear.

The American teddy bear was created in 1902 named after the former United States President Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname was ‘Teddy’ and after an incident on a bear hunting trip in Mississippi. Roosevelt was invited by Mississippi Governor Andrew H. Longino on a hunting trip along with several others. Roosevelt failed to make a kill so the hosts caught a bear and presented it to the President as a sitting target. The President refused to kill the bear himself but ordered that the bear be killed and this became the topic of a political cartoon by Clifford Berryman in The Washington Post in November 1902.

Later that month Brooklyn shopkeepers Morris and Rose Michtom saw the drawing and were inspired to create a new toy. They created a little stuffed bear cub and put it in his shop window with a sign that read ‘Teddy’s bear’. America went bear mad overnight and the Mitchtom’s went on to make their fortune with Ideal Novelty and Toy Company which still exists today and President Roosevelt had found a highly effective political mascot.

The European teddy bear was created by Margarete Steiff, a disabled German seamstress with a soft toy factory in Giengen, Southern Germany. Margarete’s nephew, Richard Steiff, had studied art at school and he helped his aunt with the design and production of her toy business. Looking for a new idea for a stuffed toy, Richard went to the Stuttgart Zoo. Among the animals he saw there was a troup of performing bears, which gave him the idea of a bear which stood upright and was jointed, similar to way dolls were made. Richard sketched the bears and gave the drawings to his aunt and from these drawing Margarete designed a jointed bear.

The teddy bear first appeared at the Leipzig Toy Fair in 1903 and Richard Steiff was approached by a buyer, Hermann Berg from the New York toy company, Geo Borgfeldt & Co. Once Berg was shown the joined teddy bear he ordered several thousand that day. This was the beginning of the Steiff Teddy Bear we all know and love.

Between 1903 and the First World War Steiff sold literally millions of bears, with their trademark button in the left ear, to the United States, Germany and Britain, as the teddy bear overtook the diabolo as the latest toy craze. Many other manufacturers joined in the craze for the teddy bear. Ladies carried them everywhere, children were photographed with them and Roosevelt used one as a mascot in his bid for re-election.

The early teddy bears were made to look like real bears, with extended snouts and beady eyes. Nowadays bears tend to have larger eyes and foreheads with smaller noses, baby like features that make them more attractive. Teddy bears come in various styles and you can even dress them up in many different styles and articles of clothing. They are a popular gift for children and significant others.

Collecting Swords

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Today, swords are a very popular area of collecting. They may be displayed along with a knife collection, or by themselves on sword display stands. Many are elaborately decorated, making them beautiful show pieces, while others are more utilitarian. Some are designed purely for decoration, while others are “battle ready,” meaning that they can actually be used.

There are several different types of metals usually used for swords. Stainless steel swords are popular and easy to find in knives designed for display. It is not as durable as Carbon steel, which is often found in swords designed to be used, such as those used in fighting shows at Renaissance festivals, or for fencing.

Sword collectors may specialize in a certain type of sword, from a medieval broad sword to a samurai sword to a Cavalry sword used in the Civil War. Nearly every era of history has a typical sword style, although swords for weaponry or personal defense began to die out in the nineteenth century as reliable guns became available.

An Eastern sword, also known as a pirate sword, European sword, or medieval sword, is characterized by its long, double-edged blade, as well as a straight hand guard. Samurai swords have a round hand guard and single edged blade, often with a slight curve. Another type of Asian sword is the Japanese katana, developed during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. These usually have a wooden handle with some sort of wrapping, and often a scabbard to match. You can find authentic swords for the past several decades, or reproduction and fantasy versions of earlier sword types.

There are also many new or reproduction swords designed specifically for collectors, including fantasy and movie swords that are not designed after any sword used in history. Swords made for decorative use often come with a plaque, wall mounted display, or stand.

Other swords are decorative, yet are meant to be used in a costume or for reenactments. These swords often come with a scabbard instead of a display stand. These swords are less delicate than those designed solely for display, although they usually aren’t meant for heavy daily use like true historical swords. Other swords for costume use have an unsharpened, rounded blade. They cannot be used as actual swords, but are safe for plays and other productions, and still make beautiful display pieces.

Caring for your sword collection includes occasionally rubbing the blade with oil. Those made of stainless steel require less care than those made with carbon steel blades. If you actually use a sword, such as for fencing, you will need to sharpen it to keep the blade sharp. Display swords should not dull or require sharpening.

Swords are available in nearly any price range. If you collect swords for aesthetic reasons, any quality of sword is acceptable as long as you like the appearance. Swords for actual use, whether in plays or reenactments or “battle ready” swords, should be higher quality to withstand this use. When buying a sword that you plan to use, it’s important to feel it to make sure it is comfortable; swords vary greatly in their overall weight and how this weight is balanced, which can affect how well you can handle the knife.

How to Make the Most Out of Beach Metal Detecting

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

If you are engaged in metal detecting and your venue is the beach, you have to make sure that you will get waterproof search coils. This activity and hobby as well can be done ideally in places which are frequented by many people on a regular basis. This is because more people would mean that they would also leave behind different types of treasures, both big and small, trash or treasure, gold or tin, and many other variations. If you can observe this, you would be able to see the value of the parks, farmlands, beaches, camping grounds, and the like. These places always serve host to different people and hundreds or even thousands of them would come and go every day. However, if you have already settled with the decision to do your little hunting, you should just ensure that you will have the right equipment for the environment that will serve as your hunting premises.

Given that you will have the beach as your area for hunting, you need waterproof coils because this is the only kind which will allow you to conduct your search in shallow water which is about two feet deep. Even if you will do your hobby in the lakes or in the seas which have fresh water and saltwater, respectively, this will not matter to you search coils for it can be used in both. However, you should be extra careful when you carry the equipment over water because you need to protect the electronics housing of the detector from water. Here are also some tips that will add more fun factor to the entire activity.

1. Stay allergic to salt spray. You have to stay away from salt spray so that you will be able to protect the metal tubes and the entire metal detector itself. This is because the electronics inside the control housing of the equipment might get damaged. When this happens, signals might not be sent properly or the detector might fail to detect the metal object below it. What is even worse is that the shop where you bought your metal detector would not cover the equipment with warranty any longer.

2. Choose between all-metal mode or adjust discrimination level. Since you are doing your search in the beach, you have to make up your mind as to the detection mode of your metal detector. Working with metal detectors would mean that you need to know about certain technical aspects of the equipment. You can opt to detect in an all-metal mode or adjust the discrimination level of the detector so that you can exclude the detection of iron.

3. Recognize real from false signals. Since you will get to work with water, you should that this element has electrical conductivity that may confuse the signals given to you by your metal detector. If you do not want to receive false signals and waste your time digging for nothing, you should keep the coil from touching the surface of the water. What you need to do is to fully submerge the coil into the water or to fully get it out of that water.

This little treasure hunting would enable you to fill your pocket with wealth and your diary with fun experiences.

Finding Treasures With Careful Metal Detecting

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Metal detecting is one of the hobbies that people have which has various benefits to those who engage in it. There are also various reasons that people would say why they like the said activity. These reasons would usually be that it gives you the chance to earn money if you already have found some treasures such as old coins, jewelry, and even a bit of gold and other precious stones; to engage in some muscle-toning activity; and to have some recreation time for yourself where you can have sometime alone as you concentrate on finding those treasures covered by sand or soil. However, every time you get out and do some detecting activities, you should prepare yourself to find some trash such as bottle caps, pull tabs, tin foil, and other junks with metal contents. You should think that working with metal detectors is like a surprise because you will never know what you will manage to dig every time you will do some detecting. To make this hobby even more lucrative for you, you should follow these tips so that you can find even more treasures than usual.

Swing in a Tight Grid

The matter of the value of the treasures that you can find also depends on the manner that you swing your metal detector. A more careful type of swinging would mean that you will need to swing your metal detector in a tight grid. That is, you will need to overlap your every swing so that you will be able to cover every space that there is in your hunting premises. This manner of swinging will ensure that you will not miss any space at all which may contain a precious diamond ring that stays hidden in the gap between your swings. By being careful and particular about your swing, you will find more treasures underneath the plain-looking soil. This is also one way of exercising your patience. Treasure hunting takes time and since this serves as your hobby, this means that you have all the time in the world to spare.

Swing Close to the Soil

Aside from being careful with the way you swing your metal detector, you should also be careful with the level at which you put your coil above the soil. This is also important because your detector would have a limit in terms of how deep it can read into the soil. For instance, your coil would only have ten inches to read. This means that you have to put the coil quite near to the soil so that you will not miss anything a few inches below it.

Watch Your Steps

Even if you already have the metal tubes and metal detector in your hands, this does not mean that these are the only things which will be needed to get the job done. You also have to watch your steps. In order to assist your slow and low swinging of the metal detector’s coil, you also have to walk slowly for the same reason that this will enable you to cover every centimeter of your hunting area.

Recycling Bins – Designed With Convenience in Mind

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

There is an ever increasing amount of concentration being placed on people reducing their negative impact on the environment. As an attempt to improve the way we treat the environment there is a focus placed on recycling. Recycling bins are intended to provide a way to divide the recyclable materials from other forms of waste.

There are many different kinds of recycling bins, they vary based on what and how much will get put in them. Recycling bins include large wheelie bins that are designed to provide a large receptacle for recyclable goods such as garden waste and cardboard. These containers typically include a hinged lid that is designed to keep pests out of the container when stored outside.

Another type of recycling bin is a lidded, box like plastic container that can be carried. These containers vary in size and colour, and provide a place to store smaller recyclable items such as plastic bottles, cans and glass jars. These containers are typically kept somewhere near the kitchen or perhaps in the garage and are carried at to the road for collection.

Recycling bins come in several different sizes, and responsible businesses are increasingly investing in large capacity containers for recycling. These larger bins are made of durable materials and can be used in conjunction with smaller indoor containers which staff members use for their recyclables while at work.

In most cities and towns there is a service that will pick up your household waste including recyclables. Most towns will have a separate week for recycling pick-up than for other waste collection. Many cities and towns also provide recycling centres in convenient locations, so if needs be, additional glass bottles, cans, foil and even clothing can be disposed of responsibly. These areas will usually be near a popular shopping area and make it convenient to drop off your recycling on the way to the grocery store.

Outdoor recycling bins with lids are a good way to keep neighbourhood cats and vermin such as rats out of the recycling and they also provide a way to mask any odours. They may also be colour coded. This coding will make it clear which type of recyclable goods the container is intended for.

There are also recycling carts available on the market. These carts hold the portable bins and provide an easy way to bring them out to the curb. These carts may hold three or more recycling bins.

There are also some indoor recycling bins that are designed to fit in the bottom of a cupboard or pantry and provide a convenient place to put the recyclables as they accumulate. These units may also be colour coded and have a cart that makes moving them easier, since it takes away the need to carry them through the house.

Cardboard recycling bins are available also. These corrugated cardboard containers are designed for collecting recyclables without the cost of a plastic bin. A popular recycling bin for offices or schools is a cylinder made of heavy duty cardboard. These containers typically have a metal rimmed edge on the top and bottom, to provide additional support.
